The Police Department in WylieTx75098

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

This article is about the unsung hero’s in Wylie Texas.
Specifically the Wylie Police Department. Wylie is a town in
Southeast Collin County with a current population of 32,696.
Not much is ever said about Law Enforcement in any community,
but I wanted to give this department it’s just recognition.

When the city of Wylie Texas was formed in 1887 it had a Town
Marshall as it’s law enforcement. This Town Marshall was a more
administrative function than law enforcement. The longest holder
of that station was Ham Hawrey who held it for about 6 years.

The Wylie Police Department came into being in the early 60’s
when Barney Gaylor jr. was hired as it’s one and only police
officer. The force at that time had a police car, and a small
building erected next to a fire house was the jail. At that
time the population was approximately 1,804.

Today however, the city has a population of 32,696 and is listed
as number 8 in the fastest growing suburbs of Dallas Texas, and
it’s projected to reach 39,000 by the end of 2008. The Police
Department has grown to a reported 40 Officers plus admin staff.

The men and women of this police force are dedicated and
committed to providing safe and secure neighborhoods through
community oriented policing, improving the quality of life for
it’s residents.

Let’s take a look at this department.

First and foremost are the Patrol Officers who are the front
line in protecting and policing this community. They have
currently one K-9 unit, with another in training. They are
responsible for initial crime investigation and the protection
of Wylie’s citizens. They provide around the clock 24/7
preventive patrol, service calls, traffic investigation and
enforcement, and enforcement of all laws local, federal,
and state. They are the first contact for the lost and
homeless in the community. They have had one officer
shot in the line of duty who survived those injuries.

School Resource Officers are stationed inside Wylie ISD schools
providing school security, classroom instruction, anti-drug and
alcohol instruction, and act as mentors to the students. They
are the link between the Wylie ISD and the Police Department.

The Criminal Investigative Division. They have 5 detectives
and a Seargent who handle about 90 cases a month total.
This division is responsible for solving 2 cold case murders
in the past few years. They are the people who do follow up
investigations to crimes. They investigate all homicides and
do the CSI work. They obtain the arrest warrants, search warrants,
and gather evidence which leads to successful prosecution of
criminal offenders, and the recovery of stolen property. They
maintain the Sex Offender data list. This division is at the
heart of the department and are responsible for the things
mentioned above and more.

The Records and Statistics division is responsible for maintaining
the Uniform crime Reports. The Crime in Wylie dropped 17% in
2006 to 1,794 compared to the 2005 figures set at 2,107, and is
currently at a lower level. These figures are based on Part 1
crimes which is the industry standard as selected by the FBI.

The SWAT team is comprised of well trained officers and
handles critical incidents such as hostage situations, barricaded
suspects, and serve felony and drug warrants. They are certified
officers who are a mixture of Patrol and other officers.

In addition the Wylie Police Department provides a number of
special services to the community. Some of those are Free Gun
Locks, Home Security Evaluations, Neighborhood Watch training,
and Self Defense for Women. These are just a few of the things
they provide, and the list is longer than I can put in this
article.

So there you have it. The Wylie Police Department are a group
of people who are here to protect and serve you. The next time
your stopped for a traffic violation don’t think badly of them,
they didn’t do the violation, you did.

When you see a Police Officer, thank them for their service and
for what they do, and remember that it’s because of what they
do that you, your home, and community are safe and secure.

Fire and Rescue in Wylie Tx 75098

Monday, July 7th, 2008

In todays world not much is said about the real hero’s in our
communities. We mostly accept the fact that they are there but
do not give them the credit or respect they are entitled to. This
article will deal with the Fire Department in Wylie Texas.

The Wylie Fire Department covers approximately 60 square miles
in Southeast collin county. Currently it has 2 Fire stations manned
24/7 and a temporary station, with a permanent Station number 3
under construction. The 2 permanent stations currently have ‘Quint’
fire truck’s. A ‘Quint’ truck combines the five functions of an engine
and ladder truck, which are a pump, water tank, fire hose, an aerial
device, and ground ladders.

They also have 3 MICU ambulances which serve the current 32,000+
residents of Wylie of which a large percentage are elderly citizens,
along with an ever growing number of young families, and businesses.
Since the 2000 census Wylie has doubled it’s population, and is
considered one of the fastest growing suburbs in Dallas Texas. The
City of Wylie, and it’s Fire Department are dedicated to keeping up
with the phenomenal growth of this area.

The Wylie Fire Department was founded and established in 1909,
and their mission statement is “Dedicating themselves to provide
a progressively trained, and fully equipped department in order to
protect the lives, property, and environment of Wylie Texas”.
This is a large task since they also provide service for the Southeast
Collin County Coalition. In addition to Wylie Texas proper they also
provide extra-territorial coverage under contract to St. Paul Texas
and portions of Dallas County, Rockwall County, and Lavon Lake.

Their staff currently includes a Chief, assistant Chief, EMS Captain,
Fire Marshall, Fire Inspector/Investigator, and Administrative
personnel. They are rated as a Class 1 Department by the Insurance
Services Office (ISO). They have a PPC rating of 1 which is split
because of their outside protected area’s, which are properties located
within 1 mile of a city limit border. The State Fire Marshall, G. Mike
Davis, states that “a PPC rating of 1 translates into the best fire
protection available, creating lower property insurance rates”.

Wylie Texas is located within 3 miles of Lavon Lake which provides
the residents as well as visitors with great fishing, boating, camping,
swimming, and water sports. The Wylie Fire Department has a Fire
Rescue Division which is surpassed by none. They are well trained
and have the best equipment available to them to do a superior job.
They currently have 2 hovercraft, and an all terrain vehicle called the
Ranger, and a pontoon craft called Marine 1 which they operate in
the performance of their duties. This video will show you a Hovercraft
Training Session. This is one of two Neoteric Hovercraft owned by
the Wylie Fire Rescue.

Your community’s Fire Department is one of the key links to your
community’s safety and existence. If you see a Fireman, Thank Him
or Her, for their work and sacrifice.

in Wylie has increased as well offering a wide variety of possible
employment options.

We have the retail, construction and other businesses currently
operating in the city. One important area which has not been
recognized is the growth in Manufacturing Facilities which are
located in Wylie. In mid 2006 is was estimated that Wylie had
41 units of this class. These businesses offer large scale employment
opportunities for the city, and surrounding area’s.

In September of 2007 it was reported that the unemployment
figures for Wylie Texas was at 4.0%. This figure includes a large
group of people under the age of 18, and over the age of 65 who
are retired.

The manufacturing industry is successful thanks to the manual
labor of the industry’s employees. Some job titles in manufacturing
include industrial, electronic and mechanical engineers, drafters,
production managers, tool and die makers, computer programmers
and operators, assemblers, inspectors, and sales reps and sales
engineers. No college education is required to get started in this
industry as a production worker, but management positions may
require a college degree. Some workers take local training courses
or learn on the job as apprentices. Salaries for manufacturing
workers are very good compared to other industries.

Let’s take a look at some of the companies available in Wylie.

Sanden International USA Inc. -  This company has a large
facility in Wylie and is the world’s largest independent supplier of
Auto air conditioning compressors.
Bayco Products Inc.- professional grade task lighting solutions

These are just a few of the many Manufacturing Facilities in Wylie. The
Products produced are varied and more are being added to the mix with
the new growth of the city. The few mentioned above are just the tip of
the iceberg.

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Every town has a proverbial Main Street. Here in Wylie Texas it’s
known as Ballard Avenue. The street is located west of SH 78
which runs North and South. Ballard itself runs East and West and
the downtown area consists of two and a half city blocks and it
currently houses approximately 40 businesses.

Ballard Ave. is historic in the sense that it has just about been here
since the city started as Nickleville before it’s naming of Wylie. In
1920, Wylie received electrical service and streetlights. Ballard
Ave. was graveled in 1923, prior to that it was a dirt street.

Businesses have come and gone on Ballard, and in December 1998,
two fires (one on the 9th and another on the 11th) destroyed and/

this unfortunate opportunity to revitalize the downtown area.

Schools in Wylie Tx 75098

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Wylie Texas is a city in Southeast Collin County and is a
Northeast suburb of Dallas Texas. With it’s rapid growth since
the year 2000 it has spread into Dallas County, and Rockwall
County in the U.S. census for the State of Texas. With the 2000
census, the city population was 15,132, but recent rapid growth
has 2004 estimates suggesting the population is at 25,850.
Once solely located in Collin County, Wylie has extended into
neighboring Dallas and Rockwall counties. Both Lake Lavon
and Lake Ray Hubbard are within easy reach of the city. Since
the 2000 census the population has grown 109.3%, making
Wylie number 8 on the list of fastest growing cities in the nation.
Current population is now listed at 32,696 with an estimated
growth to 39,000 + or - by the end of 2008, by the City of
Wylie.

In the 1890s, the town of Wylie had been served by one small
school with limited funding primarily by the parents of students
of the school. Ovid Birmingham noticed this problem and
established the Wylie ISD in 1901-1902. He set limits of the
district that all citizens in that area would pay taxes to uphold
the district. The Birmingham family soon provided money to
build the Original Wylie High School. The School has moved
from several buildings in its history.

Most of the Collin County portion of Wylie is served by Wylie
Independent School District. The Dallas County portion is
served by Garland Independent School District. The Rockwall
County portion is served by Rockwall Independent School
District.

Wylie ISD is a fast growing school system in southern Collin
County, 24 miles northeast of metropolitan Dallas and its
cultural, educational and recreational amenities.  Covering
41 square miles, the UIL Class 5A district of more than
10,000 students serves the City of Wylie as well as families
in the surrounding communities of Sachse, Murphy, Lucas,
Lavon and St. Paul Texas.

The City of Wylie has it’s eye set on education. Available
schooling is comprised of the Wylie ISD, Private Schools
comprised of Pre-K preporitory and full curicullum schools,
and Home Schooling by independent parents.

The Wylie ISD offers an outstanding academic program
with a focus on character education beginning in elementary
school. The curriculum includes a wide range of programs
from culinary arts to television production. The district
emphasizes technology in the classroom with that being a
communications tool for parents. The current 17 campuses
include Wylie High School (grades 10 through 12), Wylie
East High School (grade 9), Special Programs Center
(grades K-12),  three junior high schools (grades 7 and 8),
three intermediate schools (grades 5 and 6) and eight
elementary campuses (grades Pre-K through 4).

In 2007, Wylie East High School opened for the 2007-2008
school year. The school serves solely the ninth grade students.
Wylie East will become a 9-12 school with Class of 2012
being the first class to graduate after the district voted to go
with multiple 9-12 campuses in January 2008.

It’s Mission Statement is “The Wylie Independent School
District, in partnership with parents and the community, will
provide all students a world-class academic education which
will prepare them to lead successful and productive lives.”

The Student Demographics, as of 2006 statistics is comprised
of the following: 51% Male; 49% Female - 62% Caucasian -
18% Hispanic - 13% African American - 5% Asian - 1% Native
American. and 1% Other.
Economically disadvantaged 21%, and the Average student to
teacher ratio is 15:1.

In summary, with all of the above said, Wylie Texas is dedicated
to education. In addition to those area’s discussed above there
are a number of Community Colleges, Trade Education programs,
as well as others located within Wylie, Collin County and the
outlying area’s of Wylie. So if you’re moving to Wylie or thinking
about a move feel confident that as far as education it is here,
either in Wylie or within reach with a few miles of travel.

Real Estate in Wylie Tx 75098

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

If you are contemplating a move to the Wylie, Texas
area then these are some things you’d want to know.
Saying that a few things are happening in Wylie would
be an understatement. Wylie is one of the fastest growing
communities in Texas, and Wylie has a number of projects
that are in the planning or construction stage. Some of
those are street and road improvements along with new
buildings and facilities, to park improvements, the City of
Wylie is working to meet the needs of it’s growing population.

It’s a pretty much accepted fact that a Texas home is one of
the best investments you can make; but like many things
in life, timing is everything. Recent worrisome talk about
subprime mortgages, falling property values, foreclosures
and slow real estate markets are keeping more than a few
homeowners up at night. The cure for those concerns is
information.

Remember, the real estate game is best played over the
long haul. So trust time to be on your side! Mortgage rates
are at a two-year low. If you finance your home while rates
are low, you can save hundreds of dollars a year (or more),
according to Freddie Mac’s January 10, 2008 Primary
Mortgage Market Survey:   The average principal and
interest payment on a $250,000 loan has dropped by
$131.83 per month since August 3, 2007.

The city of Wylie has more than sufficient Real Estate
agents to assist you in making a choice. A number of
those are national firms as well as builders. Some of those
are Remax, Century 21, Coldwell Banker and others.
some of the builders are Choice Homes, Era Signature
Homes, Country Ridge, Sage Creek Phase 8 and others.

The Real Estate market in Wylie is still strong and there
is value from Wylie ISD to the convenience of outdoors
activities.  As a resident you’ll have quick access to Lake
Lavon, Lake Ray Hubbard as well as many other parks
and recreation areas that are our little secrets.

From Seis Lagos to Birmingham Farms, there is a host
of subdivisions that will meet every type of home buyer’s
tastes and price range.  It is hard not to find exactly what
you are looking for in a home in Wylie Texas - the variety
of builders make Wylie a great place to call home!

Our tax rates are lower than other equitable communities
and the Mayor has stated that he wants a decrease to be
considered in the near future. The value of the school
systems, convenience of bus service and quality of teachers
all play a part in property values, and the ability to hold
those to a high rate. Wylie ISD serves approximately 3,220
students in Pre-K through 12th grade on five campuses.
WISD was ranked an “Exemplary” district for seven
consecutive years from 1996-2003. The district continues
to rate as one of the best School Districts in Texas by the
Texas Education Agency. WISD has also been rated
“Superior” by TEA’s Financial Integrity Rating System of
Texas. This is the highest rating awarded by the state.

Public Safety sets Wylie apart from other cities. Wylie’s
Crime Rate continues to be one of the lowest in North
Texas and Wylie Fire Rescue maintains its ISO 1 rating.
Community involvement through the Citizens Police
Academy, Volunteers in Policing, CERT (Community
Emergency Response Teams) and SkyWarn weather
spotting, strengthens the Emergency response and
preparedness.

The City of Wylie projects an expected population growth
of 39,000+ or - by the end of 2008

But, there is another side of the city’s growth and that is
the commercial and business development here in Wylie.
With the growth, Wylie has now home to an expanding
business climate with industrial and commercial
development.

As Wylie continues to experience residential growth, more
businesses are popping up on the Wylie landscape. According
to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, there were 843 active sales
tax businesses located in Wylie, Texas (zip code 75098) as of
January 1, 2007. In 2006, there were only 204 new sales tax
permits issued for the 75098 zip code.

With increased commercial development, the City continues
to experience substantial growth in sales tax revenue. For the
2006 fiscal year, the City received $4.39 million in sales tax
revenue, which represented a 24% increase since the 2005
fiscal year.

There is more than one (1) million square feet of retail and
commercial development approved in Wylie that is still to be
built. The majority of this development is located along the
FM 544 and Highway 78 thoroughfares. With proactive
evaluation and planning for retail development, they anticipate
increasing Wylie’s retail base which will provide Wylie and
surrounding small towns with additional shopping options
having a considerable impact on the City’s sales tax revenues.

Some of the things under consideration are;
1. A New Library (40,000+ sq ft), Recreation Center (40,000
+ sq ft) and a New City Hall with final planning still in the
works by the City Council.,
2.  Woodbridge Crossing development anchored by Target. The
center, scheduled to open Summer 2009, features 575,000 sq.
ft. of retail space and a potential $202 million in retail
sales.,
3. More than 13 miles of new and reconstructed roadways,
funded through the State, County and City bonds, to be
completed in the next five years. Roads include Ballard
Avenue, McCreary Road, Stone Road, FM 1378, Brown Street
and McMillen Road.

The Mayor feels that the City, School District, Chamber of
Commerce, Downtown Merchants Association, Economic
Development Corporation, citizens and community organizations
working together will provide the future success of the City
of Wylie.

So there you have it Wylie, Texas a once sleepy little town,
becoming the rose of Collin County and one of the fastest
growing communities in the DFW Metroplex.

Where in the World is Wylie Tx 75098!

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Wylie Texas is a Northeastern Suburb of Dallas, Texas located 10 miles
North of Garland, Texas, 10 miles East of Plano, Texas, and 15 miles
South of McKinney, Texas which is the county seat for Collin county, and
19 miles northeast of downtown Dallas.

The bulk of the city of Wylie is located in Collin County Texas. We are
listed in Forbes as number 8 in fastest growing of Dallas suburbs and in
the nation. The population density is low and at 1504 people per sq. mi.,
and there is still plenty of open land here. In 2000 the population was
listed by U. S. Census at 15,000+ and in seven years has doubled and
grown to 32,696. The new housing boom is still flourishing in Wylie with
new home ground out construction happening daily in a number of
currently undeveloped area’s.

The city as a result has expanded into surrounding counties such as
Dallas County, and Rockwall County.

The city is nestled between Lavon Lake (21,400 acres), and Lake Ray
Hubbard (22,745 acres), and both are within minutes of  Wylie, and are
considered some of the largest man made lakes around Texas. So if
fishing, camping, swimming, and recreational water sports are your
passion there is no end to it here. The exception being Lake Ray Hubbard.
It is a State run facility and no camping is allowed around the lake.
However, Robertson Park is provided as a day-use area with excellent
bank fishing access. Both lakes provide more than ample boat ramping
area’s.

The lakes are stocked with a number of species among which are included
large and small mouth bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, as well as others.

We now have all of the amenities of any large town with manufacturing
plants already here and others which are moving into the area, and local
and chain restaurants such as Chili’s, Arby’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s,
McDonalds, KFC, Domino’s Pizza, and Pizza Hut as well as many others.
We also have our local restaurants such as The Italian Villa, Dos Charros
Tex-Mex, Taste of Home Country Eatery, The Tasty Wok and many
others.

What we do not have are major shopping malls but those are readily
available within 10 miles of us in Garland, and in Plano Texas. There
is currently a mall under construction here in Wylie which is scheduled
to open in summer of 2009.

Wylie was originally founded in the 1870’s as Nickleville Texas because
of the name of the first store which was in business. But, you can learn
more about that in my article on the History of WylieTx75098.
